What you need to succeed
Sound equipment
The Shure SM-58 is the standard mic you will find in most performing arts situations. It’s a good mic to have on hand at home or for gigs. Very easy to use, and the sound quality is unmatched.
When the mic is not being used, it is important to keep everything safe and together. There are a lot of wires and delate equipment that can easily get lost or damaged. That’s why you need a case! Gator is the best in the business for cases. This one has been with me for man years and mic + case still look brand new.
The piece of gear I am asked most about…. the bedazzled microphone! This MicFX quality crystal sleeve is designed specifically for shure microphones, but fits just about any mic. It also comes with an attachment for your mic stand. This small piece of equipment has been around the world with me a few times and I always get comments about it. Well worth the investment
This stand is equally adjustable as it is sturdy. I have worked with several other stands and this is by far, my favorite. The legs are collapsable, so it’s easy for transport and the weight is a happy medium between light to carry and heavy enough not to move around on stage. I also use a carry bag for both my mic stand and speaker stands, which you can find here.
The Yamaha Stagepas 600BT has been my portable speaker system with built in mixer for over 6 years. It can fill a room or large outdoor space very easily with two large speakers. The mixer allows for multiple mics, instruments and tracks.
These cases are so sturdy, easy to use and necessary for storage of your new fancy speaker system. They also work well in a pinch if you don’t have your cart with you. They are one of the oldest pieces of gear I have and still look brand new. The side pockets help store extra wires or gear and they roll around like your favorite luggage. Plus, they’re on sale!
GEAR FOR GIGS
When performing in a larger space or outdoors, you want to elevate your speakers. It improves the sound quality and allows for sound to travel further. These stands are sturdy and come with their own carry bag! I usually put them in the same bag that holds my mic stand here.
Carry all your gear together with this folding carry cart. It becomes almost completely flat for storage and expands to carry speakers, stands, instruments, tables, whatever you need.
While performing on the go, you’ll need a table to hold your mixer, mic receiver, water, music, business cards, and just about anything you can think of! This table is easy to fold, snaps to carry and store.
It seems like you have thought of everything, but that PVC table sure is ugly without a cover. This elastic cover is easy to take on and off, washable and very stylish for indoor or outdoor events.
VOICE LESSONS
This C-128 Tuning Fork can be used to improve bone conduction, or listening with your bones! It’s very helpful to stimulate areas of the face that correspond with areas of the voice we are having trouble with. Check it out- it’s a game changer.
Keep those shoulders down! When your teacher is not there to assist, these bands work wonders to resist the urge to breath shallow with your shoulders and upper chest. They come as a pair because well… we have 2 shoulders and its best to work simultaneously!
Music stands hold your music so you can sing with proper posture and free your hands for movement or drills. Adjustable height keeps you from looking down too much. You want a sturdy stand that can hold a heavy music book or binder. Or you can just get an iPad to store all your music ;)
My favorite way to work with sheet music is on my iPad. You certainly do not need the latest version, but using apple’s tablet is the only way you can access the best app ever created: ForScore! If you download the app ForScore it stores, organizes, annotates and even has a piano inside!
This book informs everything I do as a singer and teacher and happens to be written by my long time voice teacher, Andrew Byrne. If you want to learn about how to be a better singer with easy, concrete drills and information, check it out! You can also learn from his online studio here.
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is what I consider to be a magic elixir. It helps with digestion, skin issues, fights infection and general hydration. I put a cap-full in my tea every day and especially when I am feeling sick or phlegmy. When combined with hot water, lemon and honey this will cure just about anything.
